Police believe that speed and a possible mechanical malfunction are to blame for a multi-vehicle car accident in a northern Philadelphia neighborhood. According to reports from ABC 6 News, the accident happened at approximately 3:00 PM Monday afternoon.

Witnesses told officers with the Philadelphia Police Department (PPD) that a silver Volkswagen Jetta was heading east, near the Strawberry Mansion bridge, when the car began to violently shake. The driver lost control of the vehicle and swerved into the oncoming lanes of traffic where it was met head-on by a tan minivan.

The collision trapped a couple inside the Jetta and required rescuers to cut the roof off of the vehicle in order to pull the couple from the wreckage. Unfortunately, both passengers died before rescuers could free them from the vehicle.

The driver of the minivan also was injured in the crash and  taken to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania where she was last listed in critical condition.

A spokesman for the PPD, Lt. Ray Murphy, says that although the investigation into the crash continues, it can be confirmed that speed played a major role in the crash.
