According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), roughly 4.5 million Americans are bitten each year by dogs. Of those injured victims, approximately 30,000 require reconstructive surgery to correct the injuries they sustained during a dog attack.

One such accident occurred several weeks ago here in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, when a babysitter’s pet dog seriously injured a 9-year-old girl. According to an article from The Philadelphia Inquirer, the incident occurred on Friday, August 17 around 11:30 a.m. at the child’s home located off of Dicks Avenue.

Officer Tanya Little, a spokesperson for the Philadelphia Metro Police Department, stated that the girl was in the care of a babysitter and at the individuals home when the child accidentally opened a cage where the dog was kept. When the animal exited the cage, it lunged at the child and bit her in the face and other extremities of her body, leaving her seriously injured with severe lacerations and puncture wounds.

Within minutes of the Philadelphia dog bite, the child was rushed to a local hospital for treatment, where she remained in critical condition for several days. Meanwhile, the dog was surrendered by its owner to Philadelphia Animal Control.
