An accident on a construction site in southern New Jersey sent five workers to the hospital Wednesday morning. According to Channel 6 Action News, the accident occurred at the site of a new Quick Chek convenience store near Route 9 and Central Parkway in the Township of Berkeley, New Jersey.

Officials say the accident happened when the roof trusses of the building gave way, causing thousands of pounds of lumber and steel to fall on top of the workers. A detective with the Township Police Department, Seargant James J. Smith, stated that injuries ranged from chest pain to broken legs. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) were called and immediately began an investigation into the incident; however, their spokesman will not comment until the completion of said investigation.

The contractor responsible for the construction of the building did comment saying, “We are thankful that the injuries involved were not more serious in nature and we look forward to restoring the project and the safe return to the job site of all involved.”

The jobsite will be shut down until OSHA draws it’s final conclusions on what happened.
