Pennsylvania Wrongful Death Lawsuits have been filed on behalf of two Hungarian foreign exchange students who died in a tour boat accident two years ago. According to an article released by NBC10-Philadelphia, the girl’s parents filed the lawsuits.

The accident happened in July 2010 while the girls were on a duck boat tour around Philadelphia. When they entered the Delaware River, the boat stalled. As they waited for help to arrive, a tugboat pushed a 250-foot long barge over the duck boat, sending its passengers plummeting into the river. The two girls’ bodies were recovered two days later several miles from the site of the accident. Autopsies revealed that the girls drowned to death.

The parents filed the wrongful death lawsuits seeking millions against the boat’s owners and claimed that their negligence led to the accident that cost the girls their lives.

The boat’s owners contend that they should only be held liable for the amount of what their boats are worth, citing an archaic maritime law. If a judge agrees with the boat’s owners, they would only be responsible for paying a combined total of $1.8 million to the families of the girls.
