Driving helps older adults stay active and independent, but as you age, the risk of being involved in an accident increases.
In 2012, more than 5,500 older adults were killed in motor vehicle crashes. Another 214,000 senior drivers were injured on highways in the United States, according to the Centers for Disease Control.

Elderly Drivers and the Law
Some states have passed laws that are designed to keep elderly drivers and others on the road safe.
Delaware requires that aging drivers renew their license every eight years, but there are no specific laws regarding older drivers.
In New Jersey and Pennsylvania, older drivers must renew their license every four years. Neither state has laws that limit the driving ability of older drivers nor are there any special requirements for renewing their driver’s license.
Elderly Car Accident Injuries
Older drivers who are 85 and older suffer the most injuries in auto accidents. This is mainly due to the fact that they are more susceptible to injury and complications than younger drivers.
The CDC reports that older male drivers have a higher risk of death than older female drivers.
In some cases, an older driver is not at fault. However, an accident involving a senior is more likely to result in serious or fatal injuries, significant ongoing medical issues and a reduced quality of life. Older adults are slower to heal, are more prone to medical complications and may be unable to withstand the rigors of surgery or other medical treatment.
Car Accidents Involving Seniors
There are many factors that can lead to accidents involving senior drivers. As many as 80 percent of people in their 70s suffer from arthritis which can make turning, flexing and twisting more difficult.
Senior drivers also have weaker muscles, reduced flexibility and limited range of motion. Older drivers also take more medications, some of which may affect driving performance. Seniors also suffer from limited eyesight, especially at night, which may lead to more crashes.
