The manufacturers of the medications Americans consume have a responsibility, by law, to ensure the safety of the drugs they release to the market. Take, for instance, a warning the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recently released regarding the dangerous affects of certain medications used to treat Attention Deficit-Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD).  ADHD is a disease in which a child has trouble paying attention and controlling their behavior. The condition is effectively treated using stimulants, such as methylphenidate, in medications like Ritalin, Concerta, and Daytrana.

According to an article from NBC-Philadelphia News, the FDA has received reports that some patients taking medications containing the drug methylphenidate have experienced a condition known as priapism.The stimulating nature of  methylphenidate can increase blood flow. Unfortunately, blood can sometimes become trapped in the penis, causing painful, long-lasting erections that can permanently damage the penis.

The FDA announced it is updating the labels of mediations containing methylphenidate to reflect the risk of developing priapism associated with the ingredient.
