As temperatures in Philadelphia rose to 103 degrees, and the heat index reached 119 degrees, the death toll for heat-associated fatalities climbed as well. Philly.com reports that authorities have attributed at least 25 deaths to results of heat complications.
Six more heat-related deaths were reported in the city on Wednesday. All six victims were males between the ages of 45 and 85, and all had preexisting heart problems. According to the report, the official count of 25 may be inaccurate, and the actual total may be close to double that amount. Authorities say it is simply impossible for the Medical Examiner’s Office to assess each and every body.
Another heat wave is expected to hit as early as today. The National Weather Service offers the following tips for beating the heat this summer:
- Reduce, eliminate, or reschedule strenuous outdoor activities, such as exercise, until the coolest part of the day (dusk or dawn)
- Wear light-colored, light-weight clothing that reflects heat
- Eat less protein, as it increases metabolic heat output and escalates water loss
- Drink plenty of water and avoid caffeinated or alcoholic beverages, which dehydrate the body
- Stay out of the sun and in air-conditioned areas if possible
- Do not take salt supplements unless instructed to do so by a physician.
The Philadelphia Personal Injury Attorneys with Lundy Law encourage everyone to practice safety in the heat, and do all they can to stay cool in the coming days!
