The number of people killed in motor vehicle collisions is growing once again, especially in Delaware. A story released in yesterday’s issue of the Los Angeles Times touched on both the reasons for the increase and what officials are doing to reverse the trend.

The National Safety Council (NSC) announced Tuesday that approximately 36,200 people lost their lives in motor vehicle crashes across the nation in 2012 alone. While the nation only saw a five percent annual increase in traffic-related deaths, Delaware saw a dramatic increase in this type of fatality. Experts believe there was a double-digit increase in the number of fatal Delaware Car Accidents compared to the year before.

Researchers say the increases are likely due to a dramatic rise in the number of motorists participating in behaviors like distracted driving and speeding. A larger volume of vehicles on the road, which is attributed to a better economy and a mild winter, is also being considered a contributing factor to the growth in the number of fatalities.

To combat the problem, officials are being asked to increase patrols observing for dangerous behavior behind the wheel and stiffening penalties for those who are caught.
