The Philadelphia Police Department (PPD) and the Philadelphia Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (PSPCA) are working together to determine how a 50-year-old woman died Tuesday night. According to NBC-Philadelphia, the husband says the couple’s five dogs attacked and killed the woman.

Authorities arrived at the scene on Cary Street just after 6:30 PM regarding a call from the husband about the injured woman. They found the woman with severe trauma to her face, neck, legs, and hands. The husband said he arrived home from work and found his wife’s lifeless body lying on the floor. Chief Inspector for the PPD, Scott Small, was quoted as saying, “Preliminarily, the medical examiner, as well as homicide, are not able to determine if these injuries were caused by dog bites or any other method.”

PSPCA removed the dogs from the home and will attempt to determine if the dogs are a threat to citizens. Two neighbors told NBC that the dogs had attacked them as recently as a couple of days prior to the woman’s death, showing bite marks, cuts, and bruises.
